I grew up in a house of performers, voracious readers, teachers, and life-long learners. At four I co-wrote, co-produced, and starred in a play with my father for our dog (above). I decided I was difficult to work with, so I stuck to writing -- composing epic stories starring the stuffed animals that filled my room, and I just kept going.
I still write first drafts by hand...with a fountain pen. It makes me take my time and think about word choices. It also provides me the excuse of purchasing a new pen when I complete a new project. (Flash fiction excluded.) I have a novel about which I am passionate, but it's "in turnaround" and I'm focusing on several short stories. I also sometimes toy with several screenplays I just can't give up on, and write non-fiction for a living.
Great stories well told excite me. It can be literary, genre, TV, movies, a Vine, or a TikTok...a solid story with interesting characters that raise fun questions gets me going. And most of all, I love reading a story so good, I hate the author a little bit because it puts me back at the bottom of the hill. (I'm looking at you, Emily St. John Mandel and Amor Towles, among others.)
